No major changes were needed for this second edition, but the opportunity has been taken to correct some minor errors and to augment the bibliography. Crispin Fisher has also provided three new drawings.
As before, the book's emphasis is on the effects of weather on bird life and the meteorological aspects of the avian environment rather than long-term climatic influences, though the latter are not ignored.

Norman Elkins is a retired meteorologist and amateur ornithologist. He is an acknowledged authority on the effects of weather on birds.

"...a comprehensive review of its subject, as might be expected from a keen ornithologist who is a long-term professional meteorologist. The first chapter, entitled "The Weather" is an excellent summary in some 17 pages of the weather with particular reference to birds and their behaviour. The book is tightly written, with extensive references to ornithological and other literature. Some knowledge of ornithology would obviously be an advantage, but its lack does little to detract from the value of this well-written book."
