The Family behind the Firm Garrard & Co. is a vignette into the lives of some of the Garrard family during their one hundred and twenty years of control of the leading jewellers emporium Garrard & Company. The family took over the business in 1792, successfully developing it to become the crown jewellers from the middle of the nineteenth century. The firm’s craftsmen and designers produced some of the most exotic jewellery of the time, and the establishment of the Garrard shop and offices in India and the life of members of the family there paints a glittering picture of colonial existence as it was lived at the time of the British Raj. This intimate family history, enriched with personal photographs, paints a brilliant panorama of domestic life of the time, set against the backdrop of privilege, wealth and the glories of the empire.
