Synopsis

Norfolk is famed as a county of windmills and thereis no better way of seeing them than from the air. In thissuperbly illustrated book, using aerial photographs takenby Mike Page, the reader is taken on a flight across thecounty looking at all the sites where windmills are stillto be seen. In total there are more than 200 sites withsome visible remains. Numbers are considerablyboosted by the survival of 70 or so drainage windmillsin the Broads' area, many of which worked into the1940s. The mills themselves exhibit variation acrossthe county, not least in terms of their proportions fromthe smallest corn mill with just three floors, up to thetallest, Sutton Mill, with nine floors.A number of thosethat survive last worked as the earlier manual type ofmill which had their cap and canvas-covered commonsails hauled round into the wind by the millman.Thereis also great variety in what has become of the millssince they ended work. As can be seen in the photographs,some are beautifully restored; some remainpicturesque derelicts and some are perhaps not immediatelyrecognisable as windmill remains.
