Synopsis
The third novel in a historical trilogy that began with the International Booker shortlisted The Unseen
Ingrid Barrøy ventures out on a hazardous quest to find the father of her child.
Alexander, a Russian prisoner of war, who survived the sinking of a prisoner ship and found himself in Ingrid's arms, made an attempt to cross the mountains to Sweden, and now Ingrid will follow in his footsteps, carrying her infant daughter along the way.
Ingrid's journey sees her meet with Nazi collaborators, the Norwegian resistance, partisans, refugees, deserters, slaves and sinners. She travels along coastlines, over mountains, through mining communities and deep forests bordering secluded lakes. Jacobsen's matchless talent for description brings all of these settings and characters to life, as we see the brutal, chaotic aftermath of war through the eyes of a naive islander.
