For most of his ministry Canon Andrew White has been involved in reconciliation. In The Vicar of Baghdad he wrote, 'The kind of people I spend my time engaging with are not usually very nice. On the whole, nice people do not cause wars.' Until he left for Baghdad in 2005 Andrew was Director of the International Centre for Reconciliation in Coventry. The Icr is the centre of a network of over 250 'Cross of Nails' centres around the world, particularly in the Usa and Germany, which serve the cause of reconciliation. Andrew bases his chapters around the Coventry Litany of Reconciliation. Following the bombing of the medieval cathedral in 1940, the words 'Father Forgive' were inscribed behind the altar of the ruined building. The Litany concludes: 'Be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ.'

Canon Andrew White, the vicar of St George's Church in Baghdad, has extensive experience of conflict mediation in Iraq and the wider Middle East. President and CEO of the Foundation for Reconciliation in the Middle East, launched in 2005, he has written extensively about conflict resolution and has been involved in many hostage negotiations. He is author of The Vicar of Baghdad.
Andrew White has the extraordinary capacity to sail the seas of conflict, coming alongside those involved in causing and delivering violence, and capturing them for the cause of peace. To do this he breaks most of the rules in any book of health and safety, personal protection, and bureaucratic process ... He inspires forgiveness and demonstrates love. -- The Most Revd and Rt Hon. Justin Welby, Archbishop of Canterbury A highly commended read for anyone wanting to deal with personal conflicts and understand some key world issues today. -- Richard Hill * The NEWSpaper * This book has plenty to exercise the mind and conscience of a thoughtful Christian - but not specifically a Reader. -- Roderick Clark * The Reader *
