"I have lived among painters," wrote Goethe, "and learned, like them, to look at objects with the eye of an artist... The eye was the organ, par excellence, through which I apprehended the world." Goethe founded two art periodicals and for six years ran a series of annual painting competitions. He drew enthusiastically and his writings show him to have been a great critic of art.
There has been no edition of Goethe's writings on art in English since 1845. In making his selections, editor Gage has inclined more towards art criticism than art history, and has drawn not only from the formal criticism, but also from the informal -- letters, conversations, and biographical writings. He has included as many pieces as possible on artists and works familiar to British and American readers.Cloth over boards, 251 pp; 31 illustrations; indexed.
