Synopsis
Eric Ravilious (1903-1942) died at the age of 39, when the Air Sea Rescue mission, which he was accompanying in his capacity as Official War Artist, failed to return to its base in Iceland. In his short working life he figured in a group of exceptionally gifted artists, including Edward Bawden and John Nash, who came to prominence just before World War II. He achieved considerable success with his design work in a variety of fields, and is acknowledged to be one of the greatest English wood-engravers. Ravilious, however, felt that his most serious work was landscape painting in watercolour. Surprisingly, this material was generally neglected until the publication of "The England of Eric Ravilious", a study hailed on publication as "an irresistible book about a still underrated artist". This re-issue marks the centenary of the artist's birth. First Edition. 38 pages, 64 plates in black and white and colour, 5 engravings. Hb in dw, close to a near fine copy of this important Ravilious title; minute bump to upper corner of front cover, no inscriptions, slight mark on white surrounds of plate 5, slight mark on extreme lower edge of pages containing plate 9, 10 and 11; the unclipped dw has slight blemish (approximately ¼" diameter) on rear close to fold-over, a couple of minor marks on the lower front, and a degree of general slight discolouration on the rear; upper edge of dw is very lightly distressed for perhaps 1mm at just the top of the spine, also a tiny loss at the upper right-hand corner, perhaps 3mm x 6 mm would encompass this.
