The Book of Kells is one of the supreme artistic creations to survive from the middle ages. In 1006, the Annals of Ulster recognized it as 'the chief glory of the Western world'. In the sixteenth century, Gerald Plunket of Dublin observed that 'This work doth pass all mens conyng'. Since Plunket's day, the Book of Kells has been the subject of considerable scholarly attention. Today, there are unresolved debates on the critical questions of where and when it was written; on its relationship with other manuscripts and with contemporary metalwork and stonework; on its decorative techniques and influences; and on its liturgical significance. This volume presents papers from the first international conference devoted to a single manuscript, drawing together the findings of scholars in different specialities.
Lavishly illustrated with over 150 plates and 45 colour illustrations, these. Proceedings will be an invaluable addition to the bookcases of medieval and art historians, archaeologists, biblical scholars and calligraphers.
