In this book Dr. Pearce, a family doctor in the NHS [National Health Service, United Kingdom] from 1947 until 1979, takes a searching look at the way in which medicine is moving today, and analyses the process by which healing has moved away from its original association with the spiritual component of man to an increasing preoccupation with technology, and with cells and organs. He sees in the growing influence of the holistic health movement signs of a gradual return to the original identification of health with wholeness of body, mind and spirit. He views disease, not as an external accident, but as a product of man's own making, through his own intransigence, and considers that the healing of that disease can only come about through a restoration of a sense of wholeness and integration with his total environment. Dr. Pearce considers that cancer, so much the bogey disease of the present time, exemplifies this view of disease as self-created by the patient, and that cancer is the apotheosis of the holistic approach to the problems of life and living. Throughout his book shines a deep and burning faith in the reality of God as the all-wise and all-loving Creator Spirit, working through His own laws, little understood as yet, to lift man out of the slough of materialism into which he has descended into a state of union with the source from which he has sprung.
