Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Wrappers. Covers very slightly marked and creased, and slightly faded at spine. Inscribed by the author on the inside front cover to Anthony Astbury, "for Tony from Charles Langport 18 Oct 96"; with the recipient's neat tick at the corner of the title-page (signifying his having read the book). "I have observed that, when one publishes a translation - a thing I have done rather more often than most people - there is sure to be some reviewer who will assert that it is not as good as the original. As a way of taking the translator down a peg, the assertion seems to me rather ineffective. Where are these translations of the great masters which are the equal of the original? The reviewer perhaps has one of his own in a drawer, and is only holding his fire before he astonishes us all?" Sisson published Nine Sonnets with Astbury's Greville Press in 1991; his wife Nora's selection of his poems appeared as a Greville Press Pamphlet in 2001. Inscribed by Author(s).
