Jessie Weston (1850-1928) was a pioneering Arthurian scholar whose work, at odds with the prevailing academic opinion of her time, has been an important influence on the subsequent development of the subject. "The Romance of Perlesvaus", her last work, remained unpublished at her death. The Old French prose romance, "Perlesvaus", was composed some time after 1191, probably to promote the fame of Glastonbury Abbey. The romance takes up the story of Perceval after his visit to Grail Castle, when he failed to ask about the Grail. A strong crusader ethos is reflected in the latter part of the romance, while the earlier episodes are rich in the folklore elements and marvellous happenings of the type favoured by Weston. Weston's observations on the romance remain relevant to current scholarly debate.
