9780860123958: A Dictionary Of Religious Orders

Synopsis

This concise one-volume dictionary covers some 1450 existing and defunct Roman Catholic, Anglican, and Protestant orders, with additional entries covering the major and lesser-known chivalric Orders as well as many of the newer Secular Institutes and Lay Movements. It provides details otherwise found only in current multivolume works and antiquarian sources, mostly in Italian or French, and in small information books produced by the various Orders. Each entry is arranged in two parts. An information section lists the current headquarters, the date of foundation and the name of the founder, together with details of the original habit. There then follows a brief history of the Order and an account of the present-day activities of the communities. Sub-families of the major Orders have also been included. This much-needed, unique work, contains information that will be invaluable to researchers in many fields: librarians, church administrators, clergy, students, media professionals, writers and others in need of an easy reference to facts otherwise difficult to find.

Review

"This book is a compulsively readable dictionary of religious orders. I hadn't thought such a thing possible, but here it is. What makes it such fun is that it contains entries for orders Catholic and non-Catholic, living and defunct, religious and secular, earnest and flamboyant, famous and obscure - and I mean really obscure...thanks to the Dictionary of Religious Orders, I won't fall into the error of confusing the Franciscan Friars of the Immaculate with the Franciscan Friars of Mary Immaculate, who live in North Dakota and are "currently seeking diocesan status"."--Catholic Herald, July 2001; "Brings together in a single, thoroughly ecumenical volume information about a vast number of religious communities, extant or now defunct, which has hitherto been dispersed or to be found only at the end of tortuous enquiries...religious and others might enjoy it for dipping in." --Church Times, August 10, 2001; "In a mammoth effort of research the author provides a wealth of detail not normally included in general works of this kind, which will make the book invaluable to researchers in many fields...An addictive reference work that offers a definitive guide to the vast range of religious Orders within the Christian community."--Universe, October 7, 2001; "This volume is great fun... enjoyable to browse through"--Times Literary Supplement, February 15, 2002; "This will be a useful starting point for many persons seeking background on various orders, especially the lesser-known. Recommended for all theological libraries."--Christopher Brennan, American Theological Library Association Newsletter, May 2002; "Given Roman Catholic dominance in the religious world...the work is recommended for theological libraries and public libraries with substantive religion collections."--Christopher Brennan, Nomination for American Reference Books Award, 2003"
