Introduction discusses the pioneers in the field of cartography, beginning with Susanna Drury's gouaches of the natural phenomenon of the Giant's Causeway in 1740, which were later the basis for widely circulated engravings by François Vivarès--these were among the first studies of the natural rock formations of Ireland. Subsequent chapters analyze the work of individual cartographers, from Richard Griffith's map 1809-1830 to the apotheosis of mapping with the Geological Survey of Ireland of 1869-1890.
