Strathalder is an evocation of life on a Scottish country estate from the 1920s to the 1970s.
Based on hundreds of interviews with gardeners, gamekeepers, maids, governesses, lairds, chauffeurs, cooks and housekeepers, Roderick Grant creates a picture of a way of life which. although much changed, still survives in modern times. In addition to the harshness of work on the farms and the gradual transformation of the estate into a commercial business, we also learn much about the people themselves - their relationships with each other and those they worked for, their loyalties and disloyalties, their memories of the past and their hopes an fears for the furure.
