These are animal passions, good and bad alike, and every human being, willy-nilly, has them. How animals feel about us, of course, is somewhat trickier to determine, so you would be well advised not to leave this book lying around where they can get at it. Because as every page here testifies, the one thing they aren't is dumb.

Where the appetite for animal stories is ravenous enough that readers are willing to tolerate a bit of culture shock, this British collection is worth considering. It was put together by Punch editor Coren (who has edited a dozen humor and fiction anthologies) for the benefit of Britain's Cancer Research Campaign. Of the nearly 50 contributors, perhaps a dozen will be familiar to many U.S. readers. (Among these more transatlantic names are Sir David Attenborough and Dame Barbara Cartland, as well as Monty Python alumnus Michael Palin, novelists John Mortimer and Fay Weldon, and theatrical impresario Andrew Lloyd Webber.) Dogs and cats naturally figure in a number of these brief essays, but the hamster, tortoise, pig, gorilla, rat, goose, kudu, earthworm, and panda are also celebrated here. Certainly not an essential acquisition, but likely to appeal to animal-loving readers of more cosmopolitan tastes. Mary Carroll
