Reviews

Kagarlitsky, a young Soviet sociologist who is secretary of an informal Marxist group tolerated under Gorbachev's rule, forcefully interprets Soviet intellectual life from the viewpoint of "domestic socialism" in this book dealing with the breadth and importance of glasnost . The conflict between Soviet intellectuals and the Revolution, he contends, gives way to the "statocracy," the Stalinist "pseudoculture," and the rise of a "new opposition." Although uneven, the book succeeds on the strength of the author's conclusive demonstration of the vitality and variety of left democratic thought in the Soviet Union and by his absolute mastery of sources. The best of its kind. Zachary T. Irwin, Pennsylvania State Univ., Behrend Coll., Erie
