Synopsis

Everybody loves Novice to Master! As you'll see in the glowing endorsements and reviews included below, this modern spiritual classic has been embraced by readers of all types.

In his singularly humorous and biitingly direct way, Zen abbot Soko Morinaga tells the story of his rigorous training at a Japanese Zen temple, his spiritual growth and his interactions with his students and others. Morinaga's voice is uniquely tuned to the truth of the condition of the human mind and spirit and his reflections and interpretations are unvarnished and succinct. His great gift is the ability to lift the spirit of the reader all the while exposing the humility and weakness in the lives of people, none more so than his own.

Read on to see what everyone from Publishers Weekly to well-known Buddhist figures and even New York Times bestselling author Anthony Swofford have to say about this one of a kind book!

Review

It's not every day that you come across a book by one of Japan's top Zen masters. Soko Morinaga was head of the most famous monastery in Japan and of the Rinzai Zen university, but in his book Novice to Master we see that he started out as green as a novice can be. In brief episodes that span most of his 70-year lifetime, Roshi Morinaga tells us the stories of his life, those from which he learned a lesson and from which we can learn: how he implicated himself in his beloved grandfather's death, the thrill of his enlightenment experience, the grueling existence of life in a Zen monastery. Just the opposite of most books of this type, Novice to Master is heavy on anecdotes and light on explanation and advice. Near the end, however, the advice comes on thicker, such as how to not only live in the present but how to die in every moment. Well translated for the most part, Novice to Master represents the accumulated wisdom of a modern-day master of Zen. --Brian Bruya

About the Author

Soko Morinaga, was head of Hanazono University and abbot of Daishu-in in Kyoto, one of the twenty-four sub-temples of Daitoku-ji. After finding himself adrift following World War Two, he took up Zen training at Daishuin under Goto Zuigan, formerly abbot of Myoshin-ji and at that time abbot of Daitoku-ji. Morinaga later became the Dharma successor to Oda Sesso Roshi, becoming head monk of Daitoku-ji. He taught regularly at Rinzai temples in California and in England during the latter part of his life. He is author of Pointers to Insight: Life of a Zen Monk, The Ceasing of Notions: Zen Text from the Tun-Huang Caves, and Novice to Master: An Ongoing Lesson in the Extent of My Own Stupidity. Morinaga Roshi passed away in 1995.

Belenda Attaway Yamakawa is a longtime student of Zen. She lives with her husband and children near the Sea of Japan.

"In peope and in things, there is no such thing as trash". This was the first sermon I ever heard from my Zen teacher. Although his words did make an impression on me, unfortunately I was not keen enough to attain enlightenment as a result of hearing them. To tell you the truth, I found almost everything he said irritating. NOVICE TO MASTER is a modern spiritual classic~part humorous memoir, part cultural portrait, and part Buddhist teaching. Morinaga begins his story as young student conscripted into the Japanese army at the outbreak of World War II, details his training as a novice monk, and concludes his tale from the perspective of an esteemed Zen master. His is a world vastly different from our own, but Morinaga relates his experience with an almost ferocious honesty that transcends boundaries of time and culture to offer glimpses of profound truths. The intimate details of his life plant us squarely and immediately into his world, transforming his struggles and joys into our own. Indeed, Morinaga writes in the preface, "I hope that as you read this, you will realize that I am not just writing about myself or about something that happened elsewhere. No, it is about your own urgent problems that I speak." With these words, Sako Morinaga Roshi invites us to journey with him~from novice to master. Soko Morinaga Roshi was born in 1925. After graduating from high school, he entered Zen practice. He was ordained as a monk by Zuigan Goto in 1948. From 1949 through 1963, he trained in the monastery at Daitokuji and received the seal of Dharma transmission from Sesso Ota Roshi. While actively working in the lay community, delivering talks and writing books and articles, he served as the head of Hanazono University, the primary training university of the Rinzai sect, in Kyoto. He had a longstanding connection with the Buddhist Society of London and traveled there every year to participate in the summer school jointly sponsored by various Buddhist sects. Morinaga Roshi died in 1995. Seller Inventory # 10302103
