Synopsis

This volume records the proceedings of the 9th International Symposium sponsored by the Nutrition Committee and the Trustees of the Rank Prize Funds. The papers collected here deal with various aspects of comparative nutrition. Papers included in this collection compare growth, reproduction and nutrition, and infant nutrition in man and animals. Also included is an analysis of the possibility of the retardation of age by nutritional means. The physiology of the digestive systems of several vertebrates is compared. The metabolism of various nutrients in man and animals is analysed - these analyses include the metabolism of lipids, salts and water, nitrogen and general energy metabolism. The function of fibre in the diet, vitamin C in disease, protein requirement in the diet and the role of bone minerals and fat-soluble vitamins in the body are discussed. All the factors involved in energy exchange and the variability of energy metabolism are discussed and related to the variability of metabolic rate and basal metabolic rate between races and species. Diseases related to diet, such as obesity and atherosclerosis, and the role of animals as laboratory models for research into such diseases as these is also considered.
