On Christmas Eve a farm family discovers its missing animals celebrating Christmas in a very special way.

Sam and his family witness a Christmas miracle in this story based on the legend that animals are allowed voices on Christmas Eve. Upon leaving for church, a British farm family discovers that there are no animals in the barns, paddocks, or farmyard. After the service, they see a strange light and hear curious sounds drifting down the hillside from the old ruined church above. They race uphill and witness the angels and the animals singing together, "Glory to the newborn King." Gardam's concisely written story is well served by Rowe's precise paintings that give enough realistic detail of this family's household and countryside to make the occurrence seem all the more miraculous by contrast.
