Grade 3-5 In this German import, ten-year-old Jenny lives in an orphanage. All of the children except Jenny and Donny, who is described as being "littler than" Jenny and who drools and stutters, have "Sunday Parents," adult volunteers who spend time with children on Sunday but have no further responsibilities to them. Then Laura becomes Jenny's "Sunday Mother." She is not Jenny's idea of the ideal parent figureshe is unmarried, does not own a car and is not even very neat. Their relationship holds up through the rigors of Jenny throwing up from nervousness and Laura's preoccupation with her writing, and the two begin to get along well. The predictable happens: Laura decides to marry her boyfriend and adopt Jenny. Although readers can feel Jenny's fears and frustrations, other characters are thinly drawn, and the story offers nothing unusual.
