Condition: Sehr gut. 160 S. Umschlag leicht berieben, sonst gutes Exemplar. - The catalyst for German unification was Bismarck's victory in the Franco-Prussian War (1870-1 ). The new German Empire's aggressive nationalism was manifested in a search fora design style capable of expressing the newfound sense of unity. John Heskett discusses the changing approach from historically-oriented styles to innovative concepts of art and design which placed Germany at the forefront of design theory and practice in the early twentieth century. Against the background of intellectual, social and economic trends which stimulated this change, he charts the emergence of the concept of Kunstgewerbe (applied art), presenting a broad spectrum of theories, practice and organisations which reflected Germany's problems in coming to terms with industrialisation and its expanding role in the world. To support this unique radical thesis, detailed consideration is given to factors such as major domestic and international exhibitions, developments in museums and education, concepts of nature, and changes in materials and manufacturing technology, which were the agents for reappraisal in the late nineteenth century. The culmination of three decades of endeavor in the applied arts in new forms of commercial enterprise such as the Dresdener and Vereinigte Werkstätten and the work of practitioners such as Richard Riemerschmid and Bruno Paul, is contrasted with the impact of government policies and the influence of giant corporations such as Krupps, AEG and Siemens, based on industrial technologies which dominated much of German economic life.
