In particular, she tells of George Ferebe, the parson of St Mary s Church, an ingenious man and an excellent musician , who enriches his church with a peal of bells and an organ, preaches eloquently and trains the young people in music. When Queen Anne, wife of James I, passes by on her way from Bath, members of the church choir sing to her a song of Ferebe s own composing; later, the King himself is entertained with a football match. Using the Church Registers, Court Books, old deeds and tithe maps, and her intimate knowledge of the village, Ida Gandy describes the parish and its inhabitants in Ferebe s day: John Ernie, Lord of the Manor; the prolific Slops and Ruddles; a village Dick Whittington; and the persecuted Withers. Everyone interested in local history, especially those living in and around the Pewsey Vale, will find this book makes fascinating reading.
