Grade 6-9 Pimlott provides background and current information about the Cold War. During the era of detente, there was little written about this subject for intermediate grade readers, and since tensions have increased again, there is a definite need for new material. The beginning of the Cold War in the misunderstandings of post-World War II Europe is discussed, as are most of the steady stream of crises and flare-ups that have kept tensions alive. Pimlott shows how local wars in regions far removed from the superpowers have been made into Cold War struggles, influencing the lives of millions of people. The growth of major alliances and their strengths and weaknesses are covered, and there is a good chapter on the way in which nuclear weapons have both kept the Cold War alive and prevented total war. Pimlott's writing is largely unbiased, pointing out both the good and bad features of the various countries' foreign policies as well as the ways both sides have missed opportunities to improve relations. The digest section at the end of the book supplements the text and provides reference information. Overall, this profusely illustrated book gives a good overview of a difficult subject, even though the length does preclude much in-depth discussion. It is attractive and easy to understand, superseding such badly dated titles as Walton's America and the Cold War (Seabury, 1969; o.p.). Libraries needing detailed material should consider Cold War, Cold Peace (American Heritage, 1985; o.p.) by Weisberger. Mary Mueller, Rolla Junior High School, Mo.
