Understanding chemistry through microscale practical work is a guide to, an explanation of and we hope an inspiration for the microscale technique. It provides an explanation of where and how microscale techniques can be incorporated into practical work, outlining suggested activities and extensions. It also discusses pedagogy and how using microscale can help students to learn and understand the chemistry that they are being taught. It is for all educators, regardless of experience, but more importantly, it is for their students.

David Paterson is a practising teacher and chemistry adviser at CLEAPSS, alongside being an active member of both the Association of Science Education and the Royal Society of Chemistry. He has a particular interest in the effective use of practical work to help students in developing their technical and thinking skills, alongside their conceptual understanding of chemistry. David’s excellent communication skills and thorough understanding of chemistry curricula ensure that this book is useful for all educators, whether early on in their careers or more experienced. Bob Worley is a (semi-retired) chemistry adviser for CLEAPSS, with a strong background in chemistry teaching. He is arguably best known for his work on and passion for microscale chemistry. Like all good scientists, Bob is driven by the desire to solve problems – both technical and teaching. Bob listens to the challenges and then sets out to find solutions, which he shares back with the education community – many of which are to be found in this book.
