Stories describe families and individuals coping with the hardships brought about by apartheid in South Africa

Until now, works by contemporary South African writers have not been widely available in this country. These volumes represent three independent efforts to correct this situation, executed with varying degrees of success. While all share an overtly anti-apartheid stance, the aesthetic register of common political concerns is most compellingly effected by the two anthologies. Deliberately contesting censorship laws, Coetzee and Brink have collected English and (translated) Afrikaner writings by both established and unknown authors, many of whom are currently banned in South Africa. The editorial gesture of pluralism does not suppress conflict but instead meaningfully juxtaposes the different voices. Havemann's stories have the opposite effect. Despite his insistent irony, the liberal individualism displayed by the lone white males featured in these stories undermines the fiction's purported political and literary significance. Havemann's conventional narratives suppress any impetus for radical change. By contrast, Oosthuizen's excellent collection surpasses its intention to introduce a multiracial community of South African women writers, its intertwining of feminist and anti-apartheid struggles constituting the most powerfully moving statement of the three texts. Oosthuizen, along with Coetzee and Brink, presents a variety of genres, including interviews, autobiography, poetry, and short fiction; the depth and breadth of the two anthologies make them critically and politically significant.
