With the rise of digital electronics and further miniaturization of VLSI circuits, electronic systems have grown increasingly susceptible to electrostatic discharge (ESD). This text provides an understanding of the ESD phenomenon by reviewing the necessary electrostatic principles and developing a basic two body model to provide quasistatic and dynamic analyses of ESD in typical electronic systems. The text examines the various failure modes, including problems unique to VLSI circuits. The text also explores protection methods, at both device and system levels, as well as ESD test standards and ESD control programs.
