WINNER of the Primary Education category of the British Book Design & Production Awards!
The updated edition of this innovative handbook aims to help all children from 4 - 11 years old to write creatively. The strong visual emphasis will inspire children to write their own stories and broaden their vocabulary, while narrative planning material explores story development and shows how links can be made. Writer's tips front each of the twelve story elements: characters; feelings; size; speech & sound; speed; settings; texture; colours; objects; time; and weather.
Other key features include:
- simple layout and award-winning design that will appeal to children and ESL Students;
- photocopiable storyboards at the beginning of each section to encourage children to sequence;
- a separate introduction for older children who can work alone.
This is an inspiring resource that can be used to deliver the National Curriculum Literacy objectives across Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2.

"I found this book to be more practically useful to me in motivating and developing story writing than using a scheme, because it is so simple, accessible and fun." Teacher, St. Andrew's Primary School Speech and Language Therapy in Practice - Magazine review Speech and Language Therapy in Practice Review Stimulating This photocopiable resource designed to promote creative writing for 4-11 year olds is practical, easy to use and beautifully illustrated. It is divided into 12 sections covering key elements of creative story writing including characters, settings, objects, time and weather. Each section gives lots of visual cues and adjectives to stimulate ideas and enable the child to write a story with more depth and imagination. This resource would be valuable for vocabulary expansion work as it covers a wide range of nouns, verbs, adjectives and concepts. The section on character's feelings would be helpful for children with autism spectrum disorder. While the book provides a lot of stimulating ideas it does not address overall story sequencing / planning, so would need to be used in conjunction with techniques such as mind mapping. Useful for teachers, therapists and parents, this would be particularly valuable to therapist working collaboratively with teachers in special schools or mainstreaming projects on vocabulary / literacy skills. Reviewer: Mildred Hamill is a speech and language therapist at Thornfield House School, County Antrim, a special school for children with specific language impairment. 'Is a beautifully illustrated handbook to aid children aged between four and eleven.' - Scholastic Junior Education 'A very good book well worth having on the book shelf. I would give this book 9 out of 10.' - Sally Clare, National Childminding Association
