The Pampa Plains In the center of Argentina lie the enormous, grassy Pampa plains. Only an occasional hill, tree, or windmill breaks up this flat landscape. In the western part of the plains, the land is drier and scattered with sand dunes. The country's longest river, the Parana, runs through the Chaco, Mesopotamia, and Pampas. It joins the Uruguay River to form the Rio de la Plata, which flows past Buenos Aires on its way to the Atlantic Ocean.
