Taken from Chapter 6: The Everglades: a river of grass One of the places where alligators thrive is The Everglades. The Everglades is a huge marsh, which is an area of low, wet land where grasses, rushes and sedges thrive. The water in the marsh is actually a broad, slow-moving river that flows over a limestone bottom and drains into the ocean. In most places the water is only six inches (fifteen centimeters) deep and barely moves. Tall grasses that grow from the river bottom can be seen in every direction. There are also many islands called hummocks, which are small areas of land that are just above the water line. A hummock can support a whole jungle of plants. In other spots fresh water bubbles up from springs in the limestone riverbed.
Review:
. . this set of books stands out as a fine example of the growing trend towards dealing with animals as part of a system -- CM, Oct. 1991
