Taken from Chapter 25: Y is for Yucatan Peninsula Y is for the Yucatan Peninsula, the easternmost part of Mexico. The Maya, one of the first groups of people to inhabit Mexico, lived in the Yucatan Peninsula. The Maya built many cities, temples, and pyramids there. People who visit the Yucatan Peninsula today can see ruins of these ancient buildings. Many are hidden under rain forests that have grown over the ruins.

Grade 2-5 These series titles introduce children to various aspects of the title country via the alphabet. Entries touch on topics such as history, geography, culture, people, industries, recreation, and language. However, matching subjects to letters is a choppy and random approach to learning about a place. For instance, "A" is for "area," in Canada, yet "A" is for "all about Mexico!" in the other title. Two-thirds of each double-page spread is devoted to photographs and colorful illustrations accompanied by a short, general paragraph of text. The uneven layout varies from clear and easy to understand, to quite jumbled. Each title includes a very general half-page index. Supplemental surveys, at best.
