Mandan's herd Plain survival Nearly twice the size of cows, bulls weigh between eighteen hundred and two thousand pounds (eight hundred kilograms and one tonne) and stand about seven feet (two meters) tall at the shoulder. Cows reach only four-and-a-half feet (one-and-a-third meters) in height. A bison lives about twenty years. Few predators dare to cross a strong, healthy bull. They prefer hunting the young or sick bison. Many bison die from accidents or severe winter conditions on the plains. Only the healthy animals survive. In this way, nature ensures that the animal population will be composed of only the strongest animals.
