Taken from Chapter 6: The hippopotamus Long-time targets Once hippopotamuses lived all over Africa. In the past. hippos were hunted for their meat. Although they are still killed for meat today, they are mostly hunted for their ivory teeth. To escape the hunters, hippos stay only in areas with reeds, so they can remain hidden. The only large herds of hippos left in the world are found in Africa's national parks. In unprotected areas, their population is falling rapidly.
The attractive layout with an easy-to-read vocabulary level makes these book appealing to a wide audience. The interesting informative text with the accompanying glossary and index adds to the usefulness of these books as school research resources -- CM, Sept. 1993
