Describes the characteristics and life cycle of trees and examines their various uses

Grade 3-4-- A mixture of informal, conversational writing and hokey suggestions to hug trees, this introduction might, with its sugarcoated approach, be easy for children to swallow--but it's not very informative or palatable. For example, two whole pages are given to a story--in the worst tradition of fake-fairy tales--about a troll who smells, listens to, and feels a tree as a prelude to inviting readers to do the same. The text is copiously illustrated with small, full-color photos, most of which show a group of racially diverse children absorbed in the activities suggested; the remaining photos focus on interesting trees. Stick with Thornhill's A Tree in a Forest (S. & S., 1992) for an outstanding account of a tree's life, Udry's classic A Tree Is Nice (HarperCollins, 1957) for an emotive understanding of what trees do, and Thompson's Trees (Usborne, 1980) for an attractive and information-packed text and illustrations. --Sharon Levin, University of Vermont, Burlington
