Reviews

Grade 2-6-Two cheerful and appealing titles with directions for traditional crafts from several cultures. Models features simple miniatures of familiar objects or imaginary creatures. Festival includes decorations and items used in celebrations and ceremonies. The scope of both books is broad with objects from Africa, Asia, the New World, and Europe, although the cultural information is limited. Many processes and materials are suggested, yet the directions are somewhat sketchy, often referring readers to a chapter where the techniques are explained in more detail. Recipes for materials such as baker's clay and papier-mache can also be found in Helen Roney Sattler's Recipes for Art and Craft Materials (Morrow, 1994). However, the candle holders, toy cars, model rooms, clay lamps, prayer bundles, and kites here are irresistible. Full-color illustrations, photographs, and watercolor representations are included for both the authentic objects and the same items created by children. The latter will offer comfort to those whose creations don't look "just like the picture." Charming offerings that will inspire children to create some of the delightful crafts pictured within.
