Taken from "Ella Fitzgerald" Music and song were always a part of Ella's life. Radio and records, which were new then, brought music into her home. When Ella, was in third grade, she began to dance. She and her friends practiced dance steps in the street and put on shows for their friends. Ella also loved to sing, and she got her first training at the local Baptist church choir. She had a gift for imitation and could copy any singing style. She also had a relative pitch which allowed her to sing each note perfectly in tune. Soon she was singing jazz, the popular music of the day, imitating the great jazz singers she heard on the radio.
