Taken from Chapter 5: Ocean Floor The Earth's outer layer, called its crust, is made up of huge pieces that fit together like a giant jigsaw puzzle. These pieces, called plates, are under the world's oceans and continents. Where the plates meet, they push against each other and buckle, making mountain ranges. Plates buckle under the ocean too. The ocean floor, like the continents, has mountains and valleys. Islands are actually mountaintops appearing above the sea.
