This textbook has been written with the majority of students in mind. The mathematics major who wants to learn statistics will not be very satisfied with the presentation of the subject in this text. Such a person will find the text wordy and repetitive. Concepts that could be explained with a single page of formulas will instead be explained in several pages of text, with worked examples to illustrate all calculations. My hope is that the very characteristics that make the book unsatisfactory to the mathematics major will make it useful to the person who could profit from an understanding of statistics but who are intimidated by pages of formulas. The reaction of most students who have studied from early drafts of the book has encouraged this hope.
