Synopsis

In his Prometheus Bound, the ancient Greek playwright Aeschylus presents the dramatic conflict between the free spirit of human progress and the limitations set by divine law. Prometheus was chained to a mountain, sentenced to endure a hideous and eternal torture for wresting fire from the gods to bring it to earth. His story has become a universal symbol for human strength of character, achievement, and enlightenment. Roche's translation captures the force, the beauty and the nobility of the original play.

Roche's moving translation of Aeschylus' Prometheus Bound (3rd reprint of the 1962 edition) is enhanced by:
- Introduction setting the literary and historical context of the play.
- Notes on Production
- An Informal Survey on the Greek Theater
- Glossary of Names and Places
- 10 original illustrations by Kapheim

Prometheus
Those first had eyes to see, but never saw;
Ears for hearing, but they never heard.
Like huddled shapes in dreams, they used to drag
Their long lives through, confusing all:
Knew no brick-built homes to front the sun,
No woodwork; but beneath the soil
They lived like tiny ants recessed in sunless holes;
No measured sign for winter, flowery spring,
Nor summer full of fruit;
Without a clue they practiced everything,
Until I showed the stars to them,
Their rising and their set -
So difficult to calculate.
And numbers, too, I found them,
The key to sciences;
And letters in their synthesis -
Secret of all memory, sweet mother of the arts.
I was the first to break beasts to the yoke
And bring them to the collar and the saddle,
So make them take on mankind's heaviest work.
I fixed the horse submissively to carriages:
Golden symbol of luxury and state.
And I was the one - none other - to invent
The seaman's ocean-roaming chariots with linen wings. . . .
I, poor fool, who found for men these things
And now myself bereft of one expedient
To lessen this my sad predicament.
