A lighthearted yet historically accurate history of Rome in English, illustrated by Mark Bennington, tells the story of the Romans from the founding of the city to the time of Romulus Augustulus. A pertinent Latin quote (with translation) begins each chapter, and notes explain which ancient author supplied the more unusual bits. A glossary of names, survey of Roman history, and index round out the features.

Rose Williams has been a student of Latin since her college days in Waco, Texas, attending numerous universities in the US and studying mediaeval Latin literature in England and Italy. Professionally, Rose has taught Latin at high school and university level, and has given numerous lectures, seminars, and workshops for conventions, societies, and museums in America. She is the author of several textbooks and teaching guides as well as humorous books of Latin phrases.
Rose Williams has set out to lighten things up a bit with this offbeat history of Rome. Williams knows Rome having spent the best part of her life trying to instill Latin in young ...minds and having written several textbooks and lighter treatments of the ancient language. It is not necessary to know Latin to appreciate Once Upon the Tiber. It helps, though, if you have an interest in Roman history -- and a healthy sense of humor. --Reporter News
