Text: Spanish, English
Based in New Mexico, La Sociedad Folklorica's principal mission is the preservation both of the Spanish language in the state and the traditions of Hispanic culture. In this small volume the Sociedad Folklorica fulfills this mission admirably by collecting 364 riddles C'adivinanzas') in Spanish and placing them among colcha designs (embroidery designs used during the colonial period) from New Mexico. Ile riddles themselves can be very poetic or more prosaic. As with most riddles, they embody puns and word play. I realized reading through these two- to five-verse poems (one less than a full year's daily supply) how useful they would be to any teacher of Spanish interested in demonstrating the playfulness of the language. A Collection of Riddles and Colcha Designs would make a wonderful gift for readers of Spanish and for students on the intermediate level. Sunstone Press is to be commended for gathering these riddles and making them available to a much broader audience. -- From Independent Publisher
