Synopsis

John Routt wanted to go West! When President Grant appointed him Colorado’s territorial governor in 1875, he did not hesitate. Colorado agreed with John and Eliza Routt. John served as territorial governor, twice as state governor, and as mayor of Denver. He struck it rich prospecting for silver in Leadville and bought ranches in what is today Routt County. Routt National Forest is also named for Colorado’s first governor.
