Grade 4-6-These series entries unsuccessfully discuss broad subjects in limited space; as a result, the writing is confusing and concepts are often not completely explained. All three books are simply written with scattered fact boxes and quotes and a great deal of white space. The colored photographs do not always add to the text. For instance, a picture with the caption, "If a case cannot be settled by an arbitrator, it must go to court" shows a picture of the outside door of a courtroom. Correctional Facilities explains the difference between jails and prisons as well as parole and probation. It covers the history of prisons and some of the problems they face today. Judges describes the work of different kinds of lawyers, what judges do, and how they are selected. Appellate courts are briefly mentioned, as is the Supreme Court. In Law Enforcement, readers learn about the different types of police forces in the United States, the types of work they do, their jurisdictions, and how they work together. These titles may provide an introduction for further discussion but coverage is too superficial to make them useful for research.
