Gr 3-4--Three solid choices. Each book details six science activities with varying degrees of difficulty. Art focuses on the creative aspects of science. Projects range from using felt-tip pens and coffee filters to see how many colors are blended to make one color, to making sidewalk chalk from plaster of paris and petroleum jelly. Food shows readers a variety of things, from how baking powder works to discovering how the acids in soda break down foods just as stomach acids do. History looks at how pioneers dyed cloth using objects found in nature and also demonstrates how a telegraph works. Full-color photos, illustrations, and diagrams enhance the presentations. Explanations are clear and concise, with safety warnings given when necessary. Hints on how to display projects for a science fair are included. In fact, all the projects explained in these books seem to have been selected because they would make interesting displays.
