Published in conjunction with a 1999 exhibition of the same name organized by the Philbrook Museum of Art, and destined to travel to several venues during 2000. Arthur, who has a long list of curated exhibits and books to his credit, provides text on 20th-century progenitors of American landscape painting, realism and figuration in the decades of abstraction, the contemporary practice of plein air painting, photorealism, the landscape interpreted, and landscape as fiction and allegory.
