Synopsis

From Porthill to Franklin―from Weiser to Driggs,IDAHO INSIDE and OUT recounts the geology and the people who make the Gem State unique. Supercontinent Pangaea, the Snake River Plain, the Bonneville Flood, an aquifer with enough water to fill Lake Erie, and a subterranean ice cave in the midst of a lava desert are but a few of Idaho’s natural wonders that are described. Sacajawea, Diamondfield Jack, Peg Leg Annie, John Mullan, Chief Pocatello, General B.L.E. Bonneville and many other colorful Idahoans are chronicled. Some were pillars of their communities, whereas others had no more influence than a wisp of smoke. Yet, each of them added to Idaho’s intriguing history. In addition, IDAHO INSIDE and OUT contains 50 current and historical photos along with driving directions to the selected sites.

About the Author

R. G. Robertson served as a U.S. Marine Corps officer in the Vietnam War from the start of the infamous Tet Offensive in late January 1968 until February 1969. After completing his military service, he earned an MBA from the University of Michigan. During nineteen years in the investment business, he was a partner at Hambrecht & Quist and later a self-employed options market maker on the Pacific Stock Exchange in San Francisco. In 1990 he and his wife, Karen, moved from the Bay Area to Sun Valley, Idaho, where he began writing not only about Idaho’s history and geology but also about mountain men and the fur trade. In researching his books, the couple drove thousands of miles across the western United States, visiting the sites where Idaho Inside and Out and R. G.’s other books take place. In 1999 they relocated to Scottsdale, Arizona, and in 2014 they moved back to Idaho, where they live today. In addition to writing, R. G. enjoys mountain climbing, hiking, skiing, biking, watching movies, and traveling the American West.
