The whole of the colorful and boisterous history of ukiyo-e - the art of Japanese woodblock prints that arose in the seventeenth century and declined in he nineteenth - can be virtually summarized in the works of two great artists, Okumura Masanobu and Katsushika Hokusai. Both artists lived to an advanced age and were profusely productive to the very end of their careers, and, more importantly, they were both geniuses at innovation, creating entirely original compositions and designs or adopting and transforming pictorial devices borrowed from Western art.
