About the Author
Valerie Miner is the award-winning author of thirteen books, including Abundant Light, Range of Light, A Walking Fire, Winter's Edge, and Blood Sisters. She has been published in The Village Voice, The Nation, Prairie Schooner, Ploughshares, Salmagundi, and many other journals. Her stories and essays have appeared in more than fifty anthologies. She has won the 2005 McKnight Artist Fellowship; Valerie was a 2000 Fulbright Senior Scholar to India. She has won fellowships and awards from The Rockefeller Foundation, The McKnight Foundation, The NEA, The Jerome Foundation, The Heinz Foundation, The Australia Council Literary Arts Board and numerous other sources. She has had Fulbright Fellowships to Tunisia, India and Indonesia. Miner is Professor Emerita, University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, and is now an artist-in-residence and professor at Stanford University. She travels internationally giving readings, lectures and workshops. She lives in San Francisco and Mendocino County, California.

Soft cover. Condition: Very Good ++. First Edition. The first 28 pages of this memoir are given over to the author's telling of ` why a book'. That part resonates very well for me. The Low Road of the title refers to a Celtic belief that a Scotch soul who dies abroad will return `home' via the low road. The author initially questions her mother's unwillingness to tell family details until she understands that customand poverty and the times and the chaotic relationships - work entirely against detail and understanding. Meet Aunt Bella, Valerie, Uncle Collin, the author's mother - Mary, and most likely yourself in these 259 pages. Author has signed and also dedicated the title page. Cond : Paper wrapper is cream coloured and shows two 1930s women setting tables in a restaurant. Fore points have some wear, also other light wear. No tears, binding tight. Excellent writer's tool. Quote (p. 62) : " `Three bad girls', we called ourselves, and (while it is true I wouldn't want my daughter behaving like this, that I would never tell her about my reckless youth) our merry affairs were rather tender and innocent.
