The author of this book was one of the mail carriers who in the 1880's and 90's wasled the mail barefoot along the beach from the Jupiter - Palm Beach - Hypoluxo area to Miami, which became known as "The Barefoot Route." The entire manuscript the author wrote was about 690 pages, much too long for publication, so Professor Donald W. Curl, chairman of the department of history of Florida Atlantic University, Boca Raton, Florida, edited the manuscript to its present size. The result is a charming depiction of the "Gold-Coast" of Florida as it was in its Pioneer Days. The fact that Charles Pierce was not a professional author seems apropros for a work of this kind. Pioneer Life in Southeast Florida brings to life the counytry, its people, its flora, its then profuse fauna, and the busy evens of the times. It is an excellent source book and an integral part of the archives of Florida and is devoted entirely to the time of its early settlement.
