YA-A broad, highly visual overview that brings U.S. social history to life. Enough details of specific events are presented in the sweeping chronological text to be informative, but less than half of the book is text. The strength of this volume is its full-color captioned illustrations, excellent photographs, and clearly labeled maps that show events and trace the nation's development. Many illustrations are full page. Sidebars highlight particular individuals (some famous, some not) or topics (e.g., Civil War Medicine). Each chapter also has a double-page "Pieces of the Past" section that shows items such as toys, advertisements, and tools typifying an era. The bibliography is arranged chronologically, and includes novels. The index is detailed and subdivided, making it easy to refer to a desired topic. An attractive single-volume history.
