Synopsis
Western North Carolina during the 1840s and 1850s was very much a region of communities, and its development during that period was characterized by a subtle interplay of its residents' identities as parts of larger wholes. In social, economic, and particularly political terms, they came to see themselves as citizens of towns and/or counties within their mountain district, as westerners within North Carolina, as North Carolinians with the South, and as southerners within the nation. Through a growing awareness of their vested interests in all of these roles, they shaped their responses to the sectional crisis at mid-century.

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: As New. 1st Edition. Dust jacket is As New. Book would be As New but the front end paper and the half title pages were adhered near the hinge (likely a small production error) resulting in a bit of white paper from the half title stuck to the end paper. Also a half-circle indentation to the top edge of all pages, about the size of a nickel, again a production issue that does not impact either the content or the integrity of the book. These two issues aside the book is pristine inside and out. Dust jacket in removable clear archival mylar. A very nice, clean copy. All of our books are individually inspected and described.
